    MPEG-1 ideal for the web?

    Do you agree?

QuickTime, WMP and RealPlayer-files can only be played in their respective players. MPEG-2 and DivX can't be played in all - only MPEG-1 can. Cinepak can be played in all but is far inferior to MPEG-1.

I would agree, if you have space and good servers. The greatest advantage of mpeg 1 is because it has been available for a long time, it is almost universal and works everywhere on every platform. It is much less resource intensive than divx, hence it can be played on many older systems, including mere Pentium 1's. However, the drawback is the comparitvely large size when compared to divx. If you want a large movie, the mpeg file may not be much larger than the divx if you encode in TMPGEnc.

batman...you said every platform? i have been doing real player just for people with macs..can they play mpeg1?
also to Bienentanz: if you need the files smaller for the web you can always make the screen size smaller.

        Real Player

        Hi John,

are you saying that RealPlayer for Mac will not play MPEG-1 files while RP for Windows will? Anyway, why play MPEG-1s in RealPlayer on a Mac when they all have QuickTime available?

no..real player as far as i know only plays .rm files on either platform but i am not familiar with macs..when people request a vid for a mac i take an uncompressed avi and put it into real producer to make a .rm video file. i dont have quicktime pro so as to your quicktime question if i save a vid from premier as a .qt or .mov file it really sucks so i dont use it. real player sucks too.
thats why i have a pc ..they seem to be a bit more versatile but thats debateable..lol
i gave someone with a mac a cd rom with some vids on it and i gave them real player files AND mpeg1's just in case one didnt work..my mpeg 1's were vcd format. they could only play the real player ones.

I have a PC with RP8 and it plays mpeg files. Quicktime also recognizes mpeg 1's.
