avi problems... tried everything, but not working

i have this problem in that i download an avi video file from the net and it flickers through the first 2 or 3 seconds then freezes on a frame while the audio continues on. I have looked into this and thought it was corrupt files that needed removing. I have tried Nandub and Virtudubmod to try and delete these first few seconds and resave but instead of the problem being fixed, there wasnt even flickering anymore and just the sound works. i have tried scrolling through the movie frame by frame on virtudubmod but nothing comes out but a dark screen. i know the video is part of the file since it is a large file and too large for just an audio file. Other programs such as DivFix have not worked either. In all of these programs i have searched for errors but nothing shows up and according to the programs, the file is fine. Is there any other steps i can take to fix this?

Another problem is that instead of flickering, the movie plays for about 5 seconds, then it starts to alternate between 2 frames for the rest of the clip while the audio goes on. i tried the same methods as the above problems but nothing works... please help!

"i download an avi video file from the net"

sounds to me like pirated material, discussion of which is against the rules of these forums...and there is a lot of garbage on the net and your file is likely just that.

Actually, you've apparently worded your posting properly, so that it's not in violation of the forum rules.

However, it sounds like you've downloaded a fake file (and there are MANY such files floating around, as the "wise guys" try to punish the "greedy").

      First:

      1) Load the .AVI file (DivX-compressed or otherwise) into the most recent version of either VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod

      2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

      3) Select "Check for errors"

      4) Select "Mask bad frames"

      5) Save with a new filename

      Then:

      1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

      2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

      3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

        still...

after i did the direct stream copy and checked for errors, the "mask bad frames" option is dehighlighted and therefore i cannot click on it. does that mean there are no errors? as for this being a fake file, i dont think so because if i open the file in virtuadub, and right away click in the middle of the clip, i can see the one frame i clicked on, but if i try anything after that, the program freezes for it freezes on the one frame or it turns black.

          Again:

          1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

          2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

          3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

              Try installing the FFDShow filter

(By the way, it looks like it's a VERY poor quality video, squeezed in every way possible to reduce filesize - Half-size horizontal resolution, half-size vertical resolution, one-half fps, MONAURAL .MP3)
