What Causes Playback Hesitation?

The first time I ever played a copied disk that someone loaned me... my PS2 would hesitate... sometimes as long as a second. I've never had that problem with any disk I've created with Shrink...

But at a friends house last night there seemed to me split second hesitation between SOME scene changes. The player involved a JVC XV-S45... the disk in question was a Fuji 8x -R and it checked out perfectly in a CRC test...

Any ideas what causes these hiccups?

I've had some issues with my last batch of Fuji DVDs... made in Taiwan. I've begun to do CRC tests on all backups and some have had bad blocks. But the disk in question came up clean in a CRC test... no rereads.

I should also say that the hesitation was so minute I bearly noticed it and then only after my friend brought my attention to it. Compared to a problem I had with a disk someone once loaned me, I'm not even sure it's a real problem.

Just curious what causes hesitation. Is it the player rereading a block on the next rotation of the disk?

I don't know what software was used to copy these disks, but these little hicoughs are usually the sign of either a layer break (not possible with a DVD-5) or what is known technically, as an STC discontinuity.

This is when there is a change in the System Time Clock that is not possible to be seamlessly played back.

Highly doubtful this occurred unless there were such STC's on the original disk - especially if you used DVD Shrink (which preserves the flags).

To see if this is the problem, open the disk in PgcEdit and double click on the movie's title. Have a look at the flags. Are any marked Layer Break? Are there any type 2s or 10s?

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

• Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
• How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604
