Why Doesn't My DVD Drive Recognize Copies?

I have two DVD drives on my PC... an old OEM DVD ROM drive and a new Sony DVD burner.

The old drive has no problems with my original disks but when I load a backup copy, it does nothing. If I used DVD INFO to run any sort of test... it reads "No Media Present". If I try to read a disk using Nero DVD Speed I get a "No Additional Sense Information" error.

All these backups test out perfectly on the DVD Info CRC test. They play well on my my other drive and my PS2.

Under the Drive test... it does say it WILL read DVD-R... and that's what I've been using.

Any ideas?

How's your firmware? Up to date?

The firmware is up to date for the Sony. I never thought about the firmware for the OEM drive. It's got whatever came with the PC 3+ years ago.

Well, that's your problem drive. See if an updated firmware will help

Many, if not most, older DVD-ROMs recognize (in addition to commercial, pressed DVDs) only one or the other format of burned media - either DVD+R or DVD-R...

There's a thought. The PC fans have been sucking in dust though every crack now for over 3 years. Who knows what crap is in the old DVD drive. I may have to try cleaning since the OEM provider says there's no firmware update for this model.
