While looking for firmware update for my Sony DW-U18A ( a rebadged Lite On 812S), I followed a trail that allowed me to turn my Sony, dual format-SINGLE layer burner into a LiteOn SOHW-832S, dual format-DUAL layer burner. Here is the original posting and thread >
In that original thread, Experi-mentor gave a forum link that talked about a lot of problems people were having with the DW-U18A. Here's that link >
However on page 3 of this forum there is a posting from "Unregistered" that talks about using Omnipatch (which Cynthia mentions in the original thread) to cross-flash your burner. After downloading Omnipatch here >
(thanks Cynthia) and finding the firmware update for LiteOn 832S, I was able to cross flash my Sony into a dual layered LiteOn 832S !!!
I successfully backed up a 7.75Gb DVD (Lagaan) using dual-layered Verbatim media, checked with DVDInfo and found zero bad sectors and successfully played the backup on a standalone DVD player.
How cool is that? Thanks to those who point the way.
PS Warning, remember the original Sony was actually a rebadged LiteOn. Use caution.
