why does my backup burn speed sometimes automatically change to 12x when my burner is only an 8x.please help this very annoying. thank you!

This thread might help you.
You have it set to "max". Set it to a speed you want. Obviously, a firmware update has provided you with a speed update (which isn't always all that useful).
Many folks here, including myself, burn at 4x max anyway.

What's it actually burn at? Nero is showing you what the max burn rate is for the media.
Is your burner's firmware up to date? First click on What's my media ID and firmware in my sig and find out your firmware version. Then click on Update your firmware in my sig and find the brand of your burner and on that site, click on DVD Recorder to locate it. Check to see if your firmware is the latest.

well my media is memorex 8x dvd-r,now if i shut my pc down and reboot it will allow me to burn at 8x but after i burn one dvd and try to burn another one without shutting down my pc it automatically resets the burn speed to maximum and if try to change it only shows 1x 2x and 2.4x.now the firmware website doesn't even show my burner.thanksComment

ok they are set correctly however i just found something else out.if i put in a new movie to encode it only allows me to set burn speed at 1x,2x,2.4x,but if i encode it on to my hard drive and then close out dvdshrink after it has encoded it and open it back up and encode from files it will encode again and let me change burn speeds then i have to actually encode it twice.it just doesn't make much sense to me.it just basically started doing this today.thanksComment
