Whats the difference between Negative and Positive DVD R's?

Hello and welcome to the forums. From a "Qualitative" standpoint, there is no difference between +R and -R media only a compatibility issue when it comes to standalone players. -R media well hold a sight bit more information than +R.

My burner supports both formats and my main stand alone player (phillips 642) supports both as well, so I just keep my eyes open for the good deals on blanks

the distribution appears to be equal regarding those players that play only one or the other. On the other hand, MANY newer standalone DVD players are capable of playing both formats.

Just find out which format(s) play(s) on your lady friend's player - by reading the documentation...

A little extra though. In theory, because their refelctivity is essentially the same as pressed DVD Videos (DVD-ROM), +Rs should be able to be read by ANY DVD player. However, some players check for bookmark (which many burners can set).

compatibility issues aside for a moment, generally speaking, it's my understanding that -r discs are prefered for video recording as opposed to +r....

I'll be anxious to see your link as I've done a number of burns on +R media with no problem, but I do prefer to use -R overall as it's a bit more universal especially where "Older" standalone player are concerned.

Although others may counter - we all have our experiences, after all - I have found my older SONY doesn't like -Rs at all and my NAD, which specifically says DVD-ROM only, will thankfully play + but also turns its nose up at -.

SONY was, of course, was part of the +forum, and I speculate that it built its players accordingly, although I recall setarip saying he has a SONY which only played -R!

So, all in all, it's a very good thing for propsective purchasers that videohelp's player compatibility page can give them a guide.
