Relationship of H.264 to MPEG-4

What is H.264 and is it related (or even the same as) MPEG-4?

I was particularly interested in Apple's recent announcements about HD support and H.264. I had thought HD was to be compressed with MPEG-2.

"high definition" is simply another name for high resolutions

note that every codec can encode high resolutions, thats not something special only specific codecs can do, even if some companies try to make people believe this (apple, m$)
