Hi,
I use about 300 labels every two weeks. I don't seem to have a big problem with labels on DVDs but I do get a few bad ones(3or4 out of 100). I have emailed the label manufacturer regarding the labeling question. It seems that there may be a problem with labels and they offered to send me the new type of labels for DVDs.
After I receive and try the new labels I will post my thoughts on them.Comment

I've used some labels and yes they look pretty compared to a sharpie, but all it took was for one label to come loose at the edges. Needless to say it's been sharpie for me since then. Would like to try a cd/dvd printer.Comment

they ought to come out with a label maker that can "burn" a label on the disc(similar to a commercial disc), so there is no physical attachment to the disc."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". Jack The Ripper - 1888

despite the cost implications, i find cd/dvd printers very good, i have an epson r200 which i used to print on my printable face discs and all of them have been successful and of high quality. If you have trouble with labels (which you most probably will, eventually) this is probably the best way to go!!Comment

HP is coming out with an etcher called the LightScribe. Excerpt from the article and linkg to the full article below. I believe someone already has one out but I can't remember who...it was 'burn and turn' system.
"You'll soon be able to burn your own silkscreen-quality CD and DVD labels using LightScribe Direct Disc Labelling technology."
No more marker pens or adhesive labels. You can create your own laser-etched labels with lettering and attractive grayscale images similar to black-and-white photography, using HP's LightScribe Direct Disc Labelling technology, in the same disc drive that burns your data.Last edited by Alien Bay; 27 Apr 2005, 07:52 AM.Comment

Why are lables bad to use on DVDs?
I emailed CD Stomper and asked them that question. Also went to a local CompUSA and asked the manager of the store the samething.
CompUSA seems to think that the labels throw the disc off balance which leds to wobble and bad reading.
Stomper says that they are aware of the problem. They claim that moisture and the paper type labels led to the problem. Stomper does have a new type of label that is a film type of material. These are for DVD use. They have shipped me a package to try and I will post the results.
Also will talk to Memorex to see what they thing about it.
Also," The Lightscribe" system has been out for a few months now. It looks like an interesting way to label discs if no color or only a few are needed. You must use media that is made for the LightScribe to work.Comment

I use a sharpie on all mine as I have seen plenty of reports of labels causing problems on DVDs.....
If pushed I would buy and Epson R200 or R300 and print to the discs but as they are only backups of my own DVDs and not being sold as originals I don't feel the need...."There will come a moment when you have the chance to do the right thing......"

I use about 100 to 150 discs a week. Changing VCR and Camcorder tape from weddings, vacations, and amateur sporting events to DVD. Sometimes I will make up to 50 copys of and event for a group of people. I have found that the most expensive part of producing a disc is the ink. The best way for me is using labels with a color lazer printer.
I don't backup movies very often as once I see it I will not watch it again.Comment
