    No Sound - limited

Apologies if this is a silly question, but I havn't seen a solution out there yet, so....

A friend sent me a couple .avi files, which will NOT play sound on my system. Video looks fine. They play normally both on the friend's system, and on another I tested. My system will play any other file I throw at it, including other divx files. I've installed the nimo44 codec pack, no change. I'm using a Game Theater XP sound card. Any other suggestions? TIA.

Load the file into VirtualDub. From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information".

    Post everything listed.

(I'm guessing we'll discover that it contains an AC3 audio track - 'Unknown format Tag 2000)

Nope - Fraunhofer. It's a rip of a TV show. I'm assuming you just wanted the audio portion of the file info?

I fixed the problem, kind of. The file won't play in WMP 7, PowerDVD, RealOne, or the file player from ATI. It WILL play normally in WMP 6.4, and The Playa. On other systems, it works fine with WMP 7. That's still confusing.

      Info from VirtualDub:
      Sampling Rate: 44100Hz
      Channels: 2 (Stereo)
      Sample Precision: 0-bit
Compression: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
      Preload skew: 7981 samples (0.18s)
      # of frames: 42180
      Min/Ave/Max/total frame size 9/532/7981 (21947K)

As long as you've got it playing with some players...

(If the audio contains significantly more frames than does the video, it is a VBR [Variable Bit Rate] MP3 audiostream as opposed to the more conventional CBR [Constant Bit Rate] MP3 - which would indicate virtually indentical numbers of video and audio frames. Depending on how you've tweaked your system, this may be at the root of your original problem. This is one of the reasons I suggested that you post everything listed.)

D'oh. Sorry. Nope, similar # of frames. Here's the Video portion:

Frame size, fps: 480x360, 29.971 fps
          # of frames (time): 42193 (23:27)
          Decompressor: MS MPEG-4 3688 V2
          Number of key frames: 289
          Min/avg/max/total key frame size: 1903/11496/28215 (3245K)
          Min/avg/max/total delta frame size: 0/4845/31151 (198267K)
