    Finally got it sorted out. I have got UDMA 5 for the hard disks and UDMA 2 for LG 4040 DVD.

    I found reference to a FAQ which took forever to find on the motherboard website. In the BIOS section it mentions a hidden advanced setup menu by pressing control F1. I did that and settings appeared called UDMA primary master, slave, UDMA secondary master and slave. They were set to disabled. I set them to auto and now got proper UDMA.

    Until now, I have been setting the IDE cables to auto but it wasn't enough.

    The control F1 was also not mentioned in the manual.
