    no real gauge for this.
factors like - brand quality, burner used, frequency of use, storage, etc.

stick with a well known brands, & if it ever fails to erase on your burner, then try in on a friends burner (before you go turfing it). in most cases, by erasing in a different burner, revitalizes the "rw" media.

I have two 4x +RW Fuji discs that I have used atleast 200 times each. One of them got some scratches - so there are some pixelation on that one in the last part of the disc. But they still work. So I think that it is scratches on the surface that will kill them first - not the burning.

I've heard of a lot of brands of "good" media. What is some "good" media available at local department stores such as WalMart or Kmart?

I have used memorex for about 2 years with no problems. The last one's I got are cmc and no problems. IMO it might have as much or more to do with the specifications/quality control that a particular company/brand demands. The funny thing is I have gotten the much touted Verbatim data life plus (rw) and my dvd burner won't recognize most of them. My 2 Philips dvp642's won't read the Verbatim +rw either. Memorex +rw no problem. So if it ain't broke I ain't gonna try to fix it. For now anyway.

yep, i agree, memorex has proven for me to be the one of the best media for my burner (liteon 1213s) it loves the sony's too. god bless the men and women at memorex.

Well, I don't share their enthusiasm on "Memorex" brand media. It my opinion (and its just "my opinion", nothing more", "Memorex" brand media is very low quality media, that yields poor results.

                        I have 2 "Imation" DVD+RW's that I have used for 2 years.

I can honestly say that I have not had a single coaster with over 150 memorex -/+. I don't know what it is but my burner and my 3 dvd players love them.
