    can't play an avi file

I am trying to play an avi movie but all I am getting is like a test pattern, colored vertical stripes. I am using XP & media player but have also tried VLC, Quicktime and DVX player but with no luck. I am not getting an error message from anywhere but the DVX player says: Video data FOURCC code "MJPG" you may need to install a new video codec to watch this video.

I tried installing a number of codecs but with no luck. Any advice would be much appreciated.
