Where do you draw the line?

O.K. now that I have your attention

We talk about making backup copies of our own DVD's and that is a generally accepted practice, but what if a person rents a movie and doesn't have time to watch it before it needs to be returned. Would that fall into a generally accepted practice? Am I correct to assume the motion picture people worry most about people that are dl'ing and/or distributing/selling copies of movies?

Although I am reasonably sure that no-one here is a senior IP attorney, and having regard to the fact that different countries have different laws, I am also confident that this practice is most likely illegal in most jurisdictions. You and all readers, of course, must take your own professional legal advice.

But, if you don't have time to watch it - rent it again or pay a late fee.

Depending upon the movie and your system, it could possibly take almost as much time or longer to do a backup as it does to watch the movie. So that's not a good reason to copy a rental.

I was just asking..... I agree whole heartedly. Heck, I can't even get backup copies to play in my Momitsu DVD player. I think it's the media, but I've tried several different ones now.

Just went to a companies page (let's call them BB) and it's in the agreement that No copies of rented movies can be made under any circumstances. the likelyhood of them finding out is remote but the penalty is severe. I would warn against even discussing the burning of protected proporties on this site. Just by it and be free...
