Super8 to VHS to DVD - Cleaning it up..?

I have borrowed a VHS copy of some old family Super8 cine footage. It was commercially converted from Super8 to VHS around 10-15 years ago but has a lot of vertical scratches from the original celluloid. I have already captured the video to my PC via ATi All-in-Wonder in full DVD quality but would like to clean up and enhance the picture. I will be using either Pinnacle Studio 8 or Adobe Premiere to process and re-edit and want to know of any filters, preferably free/shareware that would help me produce a better quality final result...

I've now recaptured in avi format as VirtualDub would seem the best way to go... What filters/plugins should I need for the task..?

if you could post a pic of the scratches etc we could be able to better determine what filter would help
