DVD drive plays movies but won't read data

Hello - I have a Toshiba SD-R2002 CD/DVD combo on my laptop that performs well in all other respects but won't read data DVDs. When subjected to a data DVD the drive simply 'kick-starts' over and over. Never an error message -or any message- until I manually eject the media... then I'm told to please put a disk in.

I'm running MS/WIN-2K Pro on a T23 IBM Thinkpad. I have a gig of RAM and the latest firmware for the drive.

Colleagues that have this same drive (and I've exchanged mine with them) read just fine. They have MS/WIN-XP.
Data DVDs I burn on my Memorex + and - RW burner fair the same.

Short of rebuilding my laptop with XP, what will help me?

    All help is appreciated!

Are you closing\finalizing the dvd's? I'm assuming the dvd's are made in another computer and the combo drive in the laptop is a rom.

        Started a new thread?

Taelon - I started what is apparently a new thread in this forum because I was unaware that one thread was for all groups *is it?*. I hadn't had even a reply to my last reply to them in a week, in the 'newbie' group so... I fired off a fresh 'listing' (like real estate) in another part of this site. I now have someone else interested and I might just get some advice that'll help.

Being most likely twice your age (and half or less your recent chatting/blogging/foruming experience) this breach of etiquette was innocent ignorance. I'll do better. Shall I quash this *new* thread? How would I do that?

        Come, master... you teach me.

Mr. (Ms.?) JM1647 - Thanx for your reply. I am not closing/finalizing my own data DVDs as I might want to add to them. The original disks I couldn't read were by someone other than me, but it didn't seem to matter to anyone/everyone else who could read them with ease (with MY rom in their laptop, no less).

Your avatar is armed Peace from Wizards by Ralph Bakshi, isn't it? Long long ago...

It seems you were offended by my question, for that I apologize. It was merely curiousity and was not meant as an attack or affront. I saw that you had started a thread with the exact same question, which had a few replies, yet rather than continuing the discussion, you started this thread.

I assure you that I'm not the etiquette police, and have no interest in flaming you or anyone else. Yes I've posted alot here in the short time since I became a member. However, I doubt that you'll find any personal attacks in any of my 200+ posts. My only reason for coming here daily over these last few weeks has been an attempt to give back to the community from which I gained some insight, and to assist those requesting help with my (limited) knowledge of DVD authoring.

Apparently you think I'm some young whippersnapper, but I highly doubt you are twice my age. To give you some insight, consider that I saw Bakshi's "Wizards" during it's initial release while I was stationed in Germany in the army. I'll save you the bother of searching the 'net, yes that was long ago, '76 in fact.

Yes I've chosen "Peace" as my avatar, in part because the movie was recently released as a Special Edition, and also because I much prefer peaceful dialogue over petty bickering and flame wars that are way to common on many forums, sadly even on some highly technical ones. Eventually I'll probably change my avatar to another great character in the film, the peace loving half-brother Wizard, who's name happens to be 'Avatar'. I like it here, the people are friendly, knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is pretty laid-back. I do frequent some technical forums, but I post more here because, for the most part, there isn't much I can do to assist the 'experts' in this field, most of my posts there - are questions.

With that out of the way, perhaps we can get back to your original question. I'm assuming that your colleagues are able to read the disk you've burnt in their machines, although you didn't implicity state that was the case. If so, since you've swapped hardware to no avail, it is obviously a software/driver issue. I highly doubt that the OS is the culprit, but it will require a little digging and some patience on your part to determine the underlying issue.

Taelon - I took no offense (see my contrite 'smilie'?), but I did feel by your question that I had goofed. Again, is one thread, as it seems, for all groups? Shall I (how?) quash the other?

I too saw Wizards first run, but stateside. 1976? Holy Chrome! ;o)I think I've seen it once since and am glad it's been reissued. Elinore! THAT was her name.

Well, I'll sit tight and see if someone can help me make this ROM read data, huh? *Cheers!*

                  OldpqlyR,

Please read this page about ASPI layer and use the ForceASPI program, if necessary, to set all ASPI drivers to v4.60 (yes it's older than 4.71.2) the older one is considered better with less compatability worries.

If that doesn't help, there are a few other questions:

Which program are you using to Format the media?
Have you tried a different type of media 'dash' instead of '+' or vice-versa.
