Want to Record TV Programs.

I was not sure where to post this and finally decided to post it here. Sorry if this is not the right forum. If this is not, Please let me know where could I post this to get the right folks read this and answer it.

I like a ton of stuff that I get on the TV. I have a cable vision connection. I am in NJ, USA. I get tons of programs which I would like to record and tons of movies that I would like to record.

I would like to know all different option I have to do so. I am pretty sure that I do not want to record all this onto a VHS. If I would do that I would have a room full of VHS media in no time. I think the best thing would be to have it on a DVD's. Now the questions:

Is there any smart way, any smart device which I can setup and tell it to record all the shows on different channels that would record stuff for me on some kind of media which I can later convert all that into DVD's at my own time?

I would like to know what are the limitations and adavantages of different options. I am sure there are tons of ways to achieve what I want. But have no clue where and how should I start. I do not even know the right questions. But I do know what I want. I do know what I can spend depending upon what I can get.

Please help me to get started.
