    demux,clean up and remux

    Hey guys, yeah so I have this avi file that is public domain. It is a lecture, but there is a lot of background noise that I want to try to get rid of. At first I was thinking of adding subtitles so I could hear what the lecturer is saying, but that got to be too complex so I thought about what Taelon said ;

    “I don't know much about subtitles so hopefully someone else will chime in. I wonder though if it wouldn't be easier to demux the audio stream, clean it up using Goldwave or similar, then remuxing it.”

    I downloaded Goldwave, but Im not sure which preferences will clean it up completely. Im not even sure if that is technically possible. Im no engineer, but maybe it is impossible to completely get rid of the background noise.

    My first question is does anyone know how to ”clean up” an audio file using Goldwave or similar? I mean I was playing around with Goldwave and I could clean it up to a certain extent, but maybe there is a way to just hear what the main guy is saying and hear “NO” background noise.

    My second question is does anyone know any good programs to demux and remux an audio stream. I saw about a million different programs for that but I do not know if they are any good. I use Nero so does Nero possibly have something that does this type of thing perhaps, or do I have to download a separate program.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi RBS, I don't know if you can clean it up completely in one-pass in Goldwave, but here's a tip I found somewhere on the net that might help:
    To make really clear sounds after recording your sound file, do the following:
    1. In GoldWave, load your test sound, for simplicity make it a small phrase or a one word sound.
    2. set the start and end points to enclose a small piece of the file where there is only the background noise you wish to eliminate, and then hit control+c to copy it to the GoldWave buffer. Now you have a sample of the background noise.
    3. Hit control+a to select the entire sound again.
    4. From the effects menu, select filter, and then Noise reduction.
    5. Then select Remove Hiss and Tab over to the Reduction envelope and then select "Using clipboard." Then select OK, and you will have a noise free recording.
    Sorry I don't remember which format your files were in originally, if you have IFO's available I'd suggest using PgcDemux. If you only have the 'video container' files, such as .avi or .mpg I'd use VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod then simply load in the video and demux the audio from there. Also if the files are on a DVD you can extract the streams directly using DVDDecrypter in IFO mode by using the Settings for IFO to extract stream info.
