Please check your .avi with a free tool called GSpot to see what codec is needed ( Divx, Xivd...), download and install it, and follow blutach's recommendation
In the audio tab/audio edit of Tmpgenc Plus change the volume to 200% usually balances TV sound level with the DVD sound level.
Also, in the video tab under motion search precision using high quality slow for a two hour movie gives great results on picture quality with a four hour encoding time.
In the video tab under rate control mode using constant bitrate (CBR) will decrease encoding time.
