Avi Problems With Media Player 6.4

    Hi
i am getting really frustrated at trying to watch an AVI video format in windows media 6.4. I get an error that says it is an invalid file format, the last time i checked my options in media player had the box that said AVI formats checked. I have downloaded Divx player, and the video plays. But in my opion, that player sucks, it is sooooo slow to play video, blah blah blah. People tell me i need the codec, which they also say it is in the divx bundle, but I still can't play the video file. I have saw on the internet of what seems to be a banned codec by microsoft, but who knows. Can someone please help me, microsoft seems to be no help, hopefully someone knows an answer to my problem, thank you.

Have you installed the divx 3.11 alpha codec? If not, install it. If you have installed divx 5.0, uninstall it as it is problematic.

ok i just removed divx 5, installed divx 3.1 alpha, and still the same message, no combination of filters, etc.

does it matter if the video file is incomplete or not???

this is just retarded, if AVI is supported in 6.4 why can't i play this file, it jus dosen't make sense

"if AVI is supported in 6.4 why can't i play this file?"

It depends on which codecs (audio as well as video) were used to create the specific .AVIs that you are attempting to play, verus which codecs you have installed on your system.

Load the problematic .AVI into VirtualDub. From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information".

Post EVERYTHING listed (video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg graphic of the information box...

              1) This video requires the DivX v.3.11alpha codec

              2) It appears to be a corrupt file - the number of audio frames should be approximately equal to the number of video frames (or nearly double the number of video frames, if Variable Bit Rate audio)...

well how can it be corrupt if i can play in it the divx player no problem??

and i installed the divx_3.11alpha files, unless i installed them wrong, but i don't know how that is possible. is there a certin way or location, or it it because it is an incomplete video file that is causing the problem?

The PLAYA allows you to view incomplete downloads. Using divfix or virtualdub you may be able to play it in other players as well.

ok i just finished downloading the video, now it plays no problem, so it was because it wasn't an entire file that it was not playing, sure dosen't make sense.
