Cannot play DVD-R on Pioneer DVD recorder

I recently bought a Pioneer dvd recorder DVR-630H-S. Readable formats are dvd-r, dvd-rw. I have tried to play dvd-r discs containing content burnt through Nero and dvd shrink. I get a message saying the discs have been finalised but will not allow me to play the disc. The dvd instruction book says that discs recorded using a personal computer may not be playable due to the setting of the application software used to create the disc. Can someone help me with this please. Greatly appreciated.

Try burning at a lower speed of 4X, or 2X if its available.

It could also be that the brand of DVD-R isn't compatible with your Pioneer but is compatible with the other two players obviously

          Thanks very much

I burnt a movie at 4x and it worked straight away. the movie also played in my dvd player. When I knew what to look for I had it set to 'max'. The dvd burner I had previously was a sony and obviously not compatible with the Pioneer dvd recorder. The LG GSA-4167B has worked fine. Thanks very much.

              What is firmware?

Excuse my ignorance but what is firmware exactly. What does it do and can I stuff it up when I download the update. Thanks

firmware is sort of like a list of write strategies for the drive. updating it should provide a newer and therefore more compatible list of write strategies for your drive to support more types of media/burn speeds and create a more reliable burn.
