    Please help...ready to SNAP!

Can someone please tell my what I need to do to burn a movie so it plays in my Home DVD player. I have a movie that is in avi format. It plays fine on my computer, but doesn't play on my home DVD player. I have tried a avi to dvd program, but still no luck. What are my steps? Do I convert it to something, then use DVD shrink. After converting it, I can't even get DVD shrink to open it. I get the invald file path message. Totally confused...please help. Please be patient, I am a newbie. Thank you in advance.
