Rendering FCP4

I have recently obtained Sean Blumanthal's DVD on how to edit with FCP4. On It with the tutorial is some material for practice purposes. However to use it it seems that rendering of each shot has to be done to use it. This means it makes thing difficult to edit. For example although it runs in the viewer pic and sound when it goes to the time line no picture only the "needs rendering" caption and sound are there. Everytime an ajustment is made back we go rendering. Is there a way around this?The original is ntsc but I have a PAL DVD.
