Hooking up a VCR to computer?

Guys,

I would like to transfer old VHS home movies to my computer to burn onto a DVD.

How do I connect the VCR?

My computer does not have phono plug inputs (red/yellow/white) like the back of the VCR.

Do they make (or is it possible) to get a cable with male ends(red/yellow/white) for the back of the VCR and on the other end be a male USB plug for the computer?

If not, how do I do this?

I reccomend the Dazzle DVC-90 card, it is one of the cheapest good ones out there. It also defeats any form of copy protection.

I use an AIW ATI 8500. You can capture straight to DVD compatable format. It also has RCA inputs. Works pretty good. The ATI also has a hack the enables you to get around macrovision

Mine doesn't need a hack And if you have a fast PC, it will capture in MPEG-2. Unfortunately mine is not fast enough

Hauppage (hardware encoder) can be found on sale for app $60 for the 150 model. If you have alot of tapes you might want to look at getting a stand alone dvd recorder.

I agree, hat's how I converted all my VHS to DVD and why I asked about buffy94 having a capture card, I was going to suggest getting a standalone DVD recorder.

be careful if you do that. My friend has one and if you back up protected tapes, many give errors.

I have done many VHS tapes to DVD on a standalone DVD recorder including many Disney tapes with no problem. I guess it depends on the recorder and it's firmware.

Anyone used Kworld DVD Maker USB2.0 ? If this works it is a simple solution and cheap. Fry's has the 49.99 retail on sale for 39.99 and there's a $30.00 rebate.

Yes it does. Sorry, I should have been more clear on my be careful comment. However 3/3 that I have used eather said in the guide that they prevent backing up of copyright protected tapes, or where proved to prevent it.

Hacks exist on the internet for some recorders to overcome this.

Really? never knew that. I thought they removed the macrovision out so you view a dvd through your video. thanks for the infomation.

Oh and on the topic which I seem to be drifting off. As I said not all dvd recorders allow copying protected tapes but i don't mean to put you off that idea IMO they are better for doing the job than a pc. Although thats in my expierience My pc is kind of old, and for some reason the copys had the time and video out of sync. Also it leaves your pc for doing other things. But as I said, its just my oppinion.
