    Best resizing method

Just curious: I have some ripped DVD AVI files in 720x480, but I want to convert them to 640x480 so they are "true" 4:3. Here is a screenshot of VirtualDub's resizing options (I used Paint go make all the options show up at once... I know it looks weird!):

Which of these makes the best quality when resizing?

Lanczos variations for Downscaling, I prefer lanczos4

Bicubic for upscaling, with a scale of 0.5

The difference is in the way the resizing is applied. lanczos will give you sharper pictures than Bicubic but less compression also.BicubicResize uses the Mitchell-Netravali two-part cubic.

So... how do I get Lanczos 4? And what does "Nearest neighbor" do? That seemed to work for a video that I tested.

lanczos4 gives sharper picture, particularly for upscaling. seach google to get the filter. nearest neighbour is fast but lower quality

edit: you may want to read http://www.avisynth.org/Resize and

It says that Lanczos is good for upscaling... I am downscaling...

Heh, yeah I will... just wondering. How do you get Lanczos4? All I have is Lanczos3, the normal one. (This is in VDub)

you've gotta use avisynth for that. lanczos3 is fine, you won't notice any difference between them (you might if working with HD 1080i content)

Not while upscaling using xvid/divx (DVD sources are fine). Lanczos is bound to produce some artifacts during its upscaling process in the video.

i'll rephrase that : lanczos is best for what drf is doing

i can understand upscaling dvd (i do that myself), but upscaling xvid/divx can only make things worse IMO...
