open in virtualdubmod, see if its a 'real' (non-fake) file.

tried playing with 'media player classic'? or VLC (videolan) player?

I would try VLC. it plays most anything and uses it's own codecs

you say this is an mpg. mpg's can be opened in virtualdubmod, while mp4 cannot.

the fact that you have ffdshow installed, the file does not open in vdubmod, and didn't play with MPC/VLC means the file is very very likely a fake.

commercial h264 apps often create proprietary container thatcant be opened without proper demuxer and decoder. ( i am dying 2 find one that dosent)

H264 is a standard, infact the mp4 container is well supported and very compatible. kolyan2k tried MPC, it has native mp4 support. VLC too. and the latest ffdshow decodes it. if they can't open it, nothing can.

the file extention is mpg anyway, not mp4. (though i understand it could be incorrectly named)

actually i have not tried VLC on that file. and after downloading another .mpg HD movie i noticed that only VLC can play it. so i am redownloading it again which is a pain since the file is 3.7GB. i do have a question: befoere i installed ffdshow, i had divx icon comming up in tray, now i have ffdshow. does this mean that the codec from divx.com is not beeing used? ps. i am talking about all movie files, not HD
