you should have listened, kolyan, i suggested VLC in my first reply!

if the divx icon shows up, it means the divx codec is decoding.

yeah but after i installed ffdshow, divx icon does not come up anymore. i get ffdshow icon now. so basically does this mean that i can uninstall Divx.com codec? or i need both ffdshow (which to my understanding already has divx codec) and divx.com codec?

uninstall the divx codec, unless you do divx encoding (convert to divx)

alright thanks. sorry to bother u with probably stupid questions but i have last one. so ffdshow has both divx and xvid decoding and this means that i no longer need niether divx.com codec nor xvid.org codec and they both can be removed. will ffdshow provider better image quality over those two codecs?

          thanks again

don't worry, there have been no stupid questions in this thread yet

ffdshow is one of the best DV programs IMO, it can decode almost all types of video and audio. you no longer need divx or xvid installed. if ffdshow is correctly set up, it will provide better quality than both the xvid and divx decoders, and with much less CPU usage.

my list of what is needed regarding codecs/filters on any PC:

ffdshow - get it from http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/ffdshow

nvidia purevideo codec (you can substitute windvd/powerdvd here) -for dvd's/mpeg-2 (i use dscaler instead, IMO it beats everything else)

real alternative - so you don't have to install 'realone player'

quicktime alternative - so you don't have to install quicktime

media player classic - extremely stable and fast media player. best player ever.

oggDS filter - directshow filter for ogm/ogg

windows media player 10 if you wish

that's it. install nothing else, especially codec packs

well...the futher i go, the more help i need

uninstalled: xvid, divx, and cole codec pack
              installed: ffdshow, dscaler4, dscaler5

now i cannot play HD movies (avi, mp4) in WMP and I can only play .MP4 in VLP (i used to be able to play both in WMP). now i get this error: "The source filter for this file could not be loaded." whats wrong here?

regarding the playback of mp4/avi in wmp, go start-->program files-->ffdshow--->video decoder configuration.

go through the codecs list & make sure xvid, divx (3,4 and 5), other mpeg4, mp4 (1, 2 and 3) and H.264 are set at 'libavcodec'.

the list above was intended for playback on Media player classic (which has native mp4 support btw), not wmp, which is largely inferior. see here http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55025

ok. after going over the settings and making sure that what u stated above is done, i got .mp4 to play in WMPC. however, i get the same error in WMP and Transporter HD in .avi format opens up and just shows the first frame (does not play). btw. everything including that fashion show that didn't even open in virtualdubmod plays in VLP
