cant play avi or DivX in mp6.4 only sound

I have mp 6.4 and have downloaded 3.11 alpha and installed it but still I cant watch Avi´s or Divx. Mp tries to download a codec from microsoft but it can still not play the movie - only sound What can I do??

First of all, DivX is not a separate format - it is a COmpression/DECompression program (codec) used for compressing .AVI format videos.

Secondly, ther are many different codec available (some DivX-related, others not) for compressing and playing back .AVIs.

In order to determine which codec you need for a particular .AVI (which you've apparently downloaded and not created) you should do the following:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information, or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

If you are unable to do the above then, from within Explorer, rightclick on the file and click on "Properties". Select the "Details" tab. Although it won't provide as much information, post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information, or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box.

How do I maka a screen save as a jpg?

I believe (and rest assured, if I'm incorrect, another poster will make that loud and clear) this particular .AVI was created with the DivX v.4.12 codec. Once you've downloaded the v.4.12 codec and begin the installation, make certain to answere with a resounding "No!" when it asks if you want it to play v.3.11 files (Do NOT uninstall your v.3.11 codec).

I downloaded 4.12 and said "NO" but it still doesnt work. MP 6.4 tries to download a codec and if I answer no it plays with sound but no visual

Directx issues? have you tried the divx 2.0 player?

Try using WMP7, or at least, have it installed.
