Do people get ticketed for playing DVDs on their factory navigation screens?

My truck came with factory DVD navigation system. It does
not have the capability to play movie DVDs. Nor is there
an aux audio/video input.

I recently paid a car stereo installer $200 and he custom
installed a converter with a/v input to my navigation LCD
screen. Now I can plug my portable DVD player in and
watch the DVD on my navigation screen.(the sound comes
in from FM radio, but sound pretty decent for my needs)
The installer did make me sign a piece of paper, bascially
saying that I agree not to do this while the vehicle is in
motion, etc, etc... (for obvious legal reasons)

I do have two other screens on the seatbacks for the
rear passengers. However, whenver I have another kid
riding in the front seat, he/she gets left out... Now that
I can display video in the front navigation screen, the
kid is happy. While I drive, I do not even take one look
at that screen. I don't even allow myself to talk on the
cell phone when I'm driving.(even with the factory cell
phone handsfreen system built into the factory radio)
for that matter, I've never even had a beverage when I
drive...

However, I am worried that some cop is going to pull along
side me and see the movie being played on the screen...
pulling me over and giving me a ticket. Do they really
do that? If so, I'm thinking about making a half-shade
for the screen, so that it blocks my view to the screen
completely. Not hard to do, just a couple of piecs of black
ABS plastic. However, would this be enough to persuade
the officers that the screen is not visible to the driver side?

I would say you would have to check with your local police dept and see what they say...all jurisdictions are different

Yeah! check with your local authorities, although IMO, the sound and video does cause a certain level of distraction.

From what I understand they are supposed to have a device not allowing the DVD player to turn(if the player located in the front) on while the car is in gear

My state says it has to be in an area that screen is not visable to the driver. Most states have a DOT website, so you can search your state. You may have to go to the main state page to find a link.

The state I live in has a law stating that any screen in view of the driver can only operate when the vehicle is stationary and any aftermarket screen installed has to be connected to the parking brake, thereby only allowing it to operate when the parking brake is applied.

When the hand brake is applied? That would mean that you could watch whilst cornering though.
