You could use DVD shrink. Under Edit, Preferences, Output files, uncheck "split the file into 1 GB chunks". Then you'd have one big .vob file on your hard drive. You could rename the extension to .mpeg, or if necessary re-encode it to whatever format your Palm Zire71 needs it to be in. I don't know what formats it accepts.
um i tired renaming a vob file to (filename).mpg and it was still the vob file just with a filename with a mpg in the title
Moonrocks, I am such a novice, is there a correct way to change the file type to mpeg. The only way I know is to go to Windows Explorer, find the file, and Rename it with .mpg at the end.
Also, it seems that after I did the DVD Shrink, there were 2 files created and not 1: an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS. Should I just use the Video_TS?
im wonderin the same thing your problem helped me out too (giggle) but yeah ive got 2 files now and power dvd will not play the audio just video
but now i want to get a vob-mpeg converter and im all set
If you follow Blutach's steps you should be fine. For example Vts_01_1.vob will now be Vts_01_1.mpg. If you play this .mpg file and you're not getting audio then that's a separate problem.
By two files do you mean the audio_ts folder and the video_ts folder? You can disregard the audio_ts folder. Just look inside the video_ts folder and all the files you need should be there, vob, ifo and bup. You're only really interested in the .vob file.
After you've renamed it to Vts_01_1.mpg load it in Windows Media Player or Nero Show Time or whatever. You should have both video and audio. If not then go back to DVD shrink and preview the original video to make sure you have audio there.
sorry guys for being such a pain
the extention changed but when i go to play it in windows media payer it says its an unknown error and shuts down lol everything is shutting down on me smh
Lewzair, I am still having the same problem. WMP will not play it even though I change the extension. This is my 3rd day trying to work this out. If someone can just help me step-by-step to convert this home video into an mpeg or avi file that will play on my Palm Zire I would be thankful to them for life..........

i know right smh these guys sound so experienced yet sometimes they just aint sayin the right things but i appreciate them

Try this approach, step by step. Start with DVD Shrink. Under Edit, Preferences, Output files, uncheck "split the file into 1 GB chunks". Open your DVD and do the Backup.
Now, in the folder where Shrink wrote the files, inside the video_ts folder there should be a file vts_01_1.Vob. This is the file you need. Rather than renaming, what I'll sometimes do to make an .mpeg file from a .vob file is to use an mpeg editor. You can download a free trial version of VideoRedo Plus here:
Start VideoRedo Plus, Under File, Open Video, change "Files of type" to .vob files. Now navigate to where your vts_01_1.vob file is. Open it. Play the file inside of VideoRedo to check for good video and audio. If it's good then click File, Save As, you will be prompted that there are no cuts defined. Just click yes to remux the entire file. Then save as type "MPEG Program Stream".
Just to reassure yourself everything went well you could then re-open your saved vts_01_1.mpg file in VideoRedo Plus to check that it plays OK. If it plays fine then you are done. You have a good .mpeg file.
Moonrocks, I think I'm getting closer. I've DVD Shrinked the file and went to VideoReDo and I see the vts_01_1.vob file. However I open it in VideoReDo and it appears in the window but I can't get it to play. Any suggestions from this point???
When you hit the play button with VideoRedo do you get an error message? Go to Tools, Quick Stream Fix, give the output file a different name and save as an .mpeg program stream, click start quick fix.
If that doesn't repair then .mpeg, then I have to believe the original .vob is corrupt. When you are in DVD Shrink can you preview the video and does it play successfully there? With the main title highlighted in the upper left window click the play button in the lower left window. What happens?
Also, in VideoRedo ,under Tools, Select Stream, what shows up for video and audio streams for your .Vob file?

Moonrocks, it worked!!!! I did exactly as you said: DVD Shrink, VideoReDo, Quick Stream Fix, save as mpeg...... It worked!!! I have since downloaded the video file to my Palm, which is all I was trying to do. Thanks again.
