    Broken File

so, I used hypercam for video capturing, and I could play back the videos without a problem. The problem began after I put them on a CD to back them up for when I re-installed windows. Now that they are on the CD they will not play, with anything. I have tried quite a few different methods to repair the files, but all of them say they arent AVI files, when infact, they are labled AVI files. So can anyone help me out as to what the hecks goin on here? or how to fix them so I can view them once again?

try installing HyperCam again... maybe it used a weird codec. Also, try Media Player Classic, and install the latest FFDshow (Google it)

open the file in virtualdubmod (if its an avi file, it'll open), and post file information

if vdubmod cannot open it, and its a dv avi, then unfortunately its likely the file is corrupt and cannot be salvaged

Can GSpot open it? - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/gspot.html

Copy and paste them to your hard drive then try to open them up.

Maybe you had a bad burn when you backed up the video. That happened to me and I had to re-download everything on the disc. (luckily that was the downloaded files disc!)

well to the one response, I did put them on my hard drive.... and that didnt really matter, ill try gspot, but i think i already did...... i just dont understand how they could have gone corrupt when they were fine on my hard drive but the second i put them on a cd they get effed up..... and to the other response, are you saying, try and copy the disc? or copy the files to my hard drive and burn a new disx?

                      likely a bad burn.

rule of thumb: if the avi cannot be opened in vdubmod (and you get "can't detect file type" error), its either not an avi file, its index is completely corrupt/non-existant, or the entire file is corrupt. bottom line: recovery is unlikely

unless you got one of those disc buffers that they sell for a lot of money.
