Will Standard Def DVD's play in a High Def Player?

I read just today in the news that Toshiba began selling the first High Def DVD player in Japan. Does anyone know if this new HD DVD player and the competing Blue Ray player that will soon be released from Sony will be able to play standard def DVDs?

For the consumer this new technology is another two edged sword. One side giving us stunning video clairity right in our own living rooms but the other side will mean once again we will have to dig deep in our wallets to be able to enjoy it. It still hurts just thinking about all of those VHS tapes I threw out in the last year or so.

I beleive they will still play all previous media, including all formats of DVD's, CD's...MP3. I had read that the Bluray would.

I can't see them alienating the market that badly by limiting media compatibility.
