    Using Nero Burning ROM (jmet)?

Hi jmet I am very new to using DVD Shrink and Nero burning so found your article on how to do it while browsing not as a member. The tutorial was great and I now follow every detail to get a burn from Nero. There is just one thing I am not quite sure of though in your opening which confused me.

I cant understand about the Booktyping it to DVD-ROM and the bit that says Booktyping is only for DVD+R. I usually use DVD-R

The reason I ask is when I have finished doing all the right things, I get an error at the end of the burn saying failed, but it actually hasn't and plays on my Denon 2910 and my Panasonic DVD/VCR combo.

Is there something I am doing wrong or need to alter in Nero please.

See here for how to post a Nero log file.

If we review a failed burn we should be able to find the trouble.

    Welcome to the forums.

Hi vw56german thank you for the welcome. I have just burnt another disc and had the same message Failed. It plays perfectly on both my players though. I kept the log file with a couple of alterations to my registration and my name. I am using the Nero everybody says I should use 6.6.0.18. I uninstalled latest version I had and used Nero cleaner before install.

How old is the drive? Makes me wonder if it needs a good cleaning or could be starting to fail. I have seen "Key Medium" errors and they usually point to poor media or the need for a firmware update.

I am guessing that a "Key hardware error" and a focus or tracking error point to more of a possible drive problem.

Have you done much over burning when in CD mode? I have not seen it but have heard drive damage can result.

Try an experiment. Go in to the options in Shrink and decrease the target size to 4200Mb see if the drive can write that far out with out failing. If it can I suspect a failing burner.

Thank you for reply. I have had the drive for just over two years now and haven't done a lot of burning. It came as is without parts from Ebuyer. I don't know about updating the firmware for it either. I have no idea what overburning is. I can't say when I used the CD part of the burner. Hardly ever, and wouldn't know how to put it into overburn mode, whatever that is. I did say that the burn, although getting a failed result, always plays perfectly on my two players. I can't understand any of what the log is saying. I think even if I do try to shrink a bit smaller it will still fail but still play OK. I do know that the CD part of it won't recognize a disc for burning, so assumed the laser for that part was finished.

Hope you can advise me on this. I usually use Phillips CD-R and Maxell DVD+R/RW and Verbatim DVD+R/RW and Verbatim DVD-R/RW, which have always burnt fine in the past.

look for software for dvd-rom writters, I found a A104 FIRMWARE for your drive on page 3
thats a must with this old a drive, media has changed, yours has the original firmware

Hi Chewy thank you for URL. I have found the page OK and downloaded the file. I will install and come back to let you know if it works OK. I have just read the update instructions. It seems I have to connect it as a master with no other device on the same IDE cable . Does that mean I will have to open the computer, remove the cable from my DVD rom drive, which is the slave? I don't mind doing that but then you have to open it again to reconnect the ROM drive after testing it is OK. That seems a bit ridiculous, but if it has to be done I will do it.

As a matter of interest could you go into Device manager and disable the ROM drive rather than opening the computer to disengage it from the IDE cable? I would also like to say I have only used DVD Shrink for a week and noticed somewhere about overburn, but can't say I have ever used it. I have only used Windows Media Player or Pinnacle Studio8 previously, and haven't seen an overburn setting in either of these.

I have a lot of burners and read about bad flashes all the time, be safe not sorry.
Anyway that drive was reviewed 2 years ago and that's a long time, since
new modern burners are so cheap, that makes a 2yr old one near worthless.
Open the computer, boot into safe mode and flash. Having another lg drive on the same cable is why you need to go by the book.

Hi vw56german and chewy. I have now flashed the latest update for my LG as per instructions which said it was successful. I can now burn CDs again in Windows Media and Nero. I can no longer burn a back-up film anymore, not even with a failed message, that still used to play Ok in both my Denon and Panasonic DVD player and recorder. I now make useless junk, which almost makes my computer freeze. I have just tried with a back-up and this is my latest failed log. Could you please have a look at it and see if I am still doing something wrong. Thank you in advance.

It is bad because it doesn't work as good as it used to. What does that mean then "No seek complete" please and what do I need to do to make it seek.

I hope I am going along the same line of thinking that Chewy is. First two more threads to look at:

                            (isnt learning fun )

The first thread leads into the second.

My interpretation of the errors is leading me to believe the drive is failing. Reasons being that for this "no seek complete" error the things listed to check are DMA, Media, and finally the drive being faulty. Also the previous errors of Key hardware and focus tracking point to the same media and drive faults as well as a drive connection error. Assuming that both before and after your firmware update the drive connections were good and the master/slave was set correctly then the "drive connection" solution should not be at fault. Your media is not of horrible quality, so that should not be the issue. (it could be a bad patch of discs but, i am not convinced of that) Your DMA appears to be set correctly, so that should not be a cause. Which sadly leaves the drive itself.

Being as old as it is, per Chewy's information it might be wise to consider replacement. Good dual layer drives are not terribly expencive, often times not more than $40 USD when on sale or with rebates. I wish I could tell you positively that the drive is bad, but I cant. You will have to make the call on whether it is time to update or not. To me though the cost vs. hassle would be in favor of an update.

I am leaning toward the bad drive theory, but I would try one last thing,
use shrink to make an iso and try a burn with imgburn
