i was wondering if you have an older dvd player (5 years old) and it says that it will read burnt dvds, but just skips and doesn't play it. why is that. I also have a 3 year old one and it plays them better but still has some problems. On the 3 year old one some dvds will skip so i will shut it off and wait 10-15 mins and let the dvd and the player cool down. then it will work again. Can the dvds get too hot and not work correctly. I use verbatim dvds.

Some players will play -R and not +R and vice versa. I have an older player (at least 5 yrs old) that plays +Rs with no problem but will not play DLs. Another player which is about 2 yrs old which will play the DLs. I know on the boxes they ususally list all the media they will play, although I have known what they advertise to play does not always hold true.
This site will tell you about your players compatibility with media. Don't know if this will help you or not:

Sound's familier what's happening in our house. First had problems with the back-ups, then the originals. Yes the player was getting hot, and had plenty of ventilation.
The brand on our's was APEX which was quite cheap to invest in $40.
What brand and model are you having problems with?
