How to Check if Sony is New?

I just bought a Sony Hard Drive Camcorder (DCR-SR100). I suspect that it has been used - i.e. someone bought it and returned it to the store - and the store is selling it out as new again. The box looks okay, but the store didn't have any new ones before, and apparently the model has been unavailable from Sony for the past month.

Any suggestions on how to check to see if it is indeed new?

Go to http://esupport.sony.com and enter the unit's model number in the box at the lower right corner of the page, then click the arrow button. This should give you up to date information about the unit, any firmware updates and any new accessories that may be available.
