i was just browsing and found this;
In order for the DVD player to display an anamorphic as letterboxed on a 4:3 monitor several things must be true.
1) The video stream must have 16:9 as the aspect ratio (note: if the source is other than 16:9, such as 2.35:1, you will need to resize and add black on the top and bottom to convert to 16:9)
2) the video attributes for the title set must be 16:9 (bits 2&3 of the first video attribute byte set)
3) the "automatic letterbox" flag (bit 0 of the first video attribute byte) must be 0.
4) "letterboxed" attribute (bit 1 of the second video attribute byte) should NOT be set.
5) The player must be set for 4:3 output, otherwise a widescreen capable monitor is assumed.
is that all true? cause i remember i tried this... i opened the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO in ifoedit... below it shows the VMG overview and it shows the aspect ratio there... which was 4:3 so i double click it and change it to 16:9... save it... then open the VIDEO_TS.IFO (on the pc) and it plays the whole movie in 16:9 although if you open one vob on its own it will play in 4:3 cause that's the true video aspect. but once i heard if you change the aspect in the ifo it will trick the dvd player to play it in 16:9. unfortunately when i played it on the dvd player it didn't play in 16:9 the way i wanted it... only on the computer it does, when i play it in media player classic. also, i'm just guessing but the squashed image after changing 4:3 to 16:9 is unavoidable right? means the movie was made like that?
here's another thing i ran into while browsing... which i've already tried with no luck...
Solutions:
The simplest solution to solve this problem for your widescreen display is to setup your standalone DVD player's "TV Output" setting to "4:3" (either pan-scan or letterbox will do)
it still showed in 4:3. the only solution for me is a simple one button hit on the control that makes the tv show in 16:9. there is a fault on that though, when you change channels the tv pushes it back to 4:3 even if you change this in the tv settings and save it. weird eh? but if im watching a dvd, all i have to do is hit that button and keep it on the same channel cause it's unlikely that i'm going to be changing it.
