    Recording .avi files on cd's

    Hi everyone,

I am very new to this so I hope I make sense with my post.

I have .avi files that I want to burn on a cd, since I do not have a dvd recorder. My questions are:

Can an .avi file be compressed? If yes, which program can I use? There are programs that convert .avi files to vcd but I have not seen anything to convert to divx. Is there such a program?

Which is better? avi, vcd, divx?

I understand there is a dvd player that plays avi files, I believe it is Phillips dvd player. I was thinking of just buying that to play my avi files but then I could not give a copy to my friends because chances are they would not be able to play it on their cd.

I have searched hours and hours reaching on this subject, as these posts as well. All of the posts I have seen on this subject refer to burning on dvd, not on cd.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I give up on searching lol.

I believe that the only way to make a playable CD is to convert to either SVCD or VCD. Many DVD players will accept this format and if your friends have this type of DVD player they will also. I'm sure you'll get some much more informed feedback from the more experienced members shortly. I'm still a noob here.

      Record AVI on CD-R's

      Hi lynne,

      Welcome to the forums!!!

Here is a very short read for some good AVI info.

Do you have any burning software installed that came w/ your burner?

The Nero Burning package that came w/ my (CDR/DVDR) burner will create a VCD/SVCD, but will not do any compression...

      refer to http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...vi+compression

I started out burning AVI's to CD-R's, but w/ the small capacity of the discs, I decided to go w/ the DVD-R method instead.

With the price of DVD burners being what they are these days, $30 -$60 for a quality burner, I went with the DVD approach.

To me, it is an all-around easier approach, since the media will play on most DVD players w/o compatability issues, which I ran into with SVCD's on some of my friends players.

Plus, I would say that the picture quality is much better w/ DVD, since you would not be compressing the files any farther.

      Just my humble opinion

Stay tuned to this forum, I am sure other will join in with more good ideas!

      Regards,

      KATZDVD

        Hi Lynne,
AVI is only a container which may have DivX encoded files in it.It may even have mpeg files!!Now suppose u have Divx(or Xvid) encoded avi files and want to play them in ur standalone DVD player.Yes ,if supported ,ur player CAN play these files burnt as Data-CD or Data-DVD.I have a LG DVD player (DivX certified) and it flawlessly plays these CDs or DVDs.

As paglamon suggested in subliminal way, get a DivX certified player. Then you would be able to burn the actual .avi file to just a CD-R (not a DVD) and watch it with that DVD player. There would be no converting at all.

I bought a certified DivX player from Wal-Mart for around $50. They have since gone down in price. Here is one for $38: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4810681

I do not have a dvd burner. I guess most of what I want to burn are smaller avi files and do not want to use a dvd.

              You have good suggestions.

I did not know that divx can play avi files.

I have a new problem now.

I used Ashampoo to shrink and recode my avi files and got this message

              "Indexing filter system deamon"

I have been searching the net to fix this but cannot.

You guys have any idea. ??

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

              Lynne

I don't know anything about "Ashampoo" software.

                Sorry maybe someone else does.

                  Hi lynne,

Do you have any burning software installed that came w/ your CDR burner?
If so, you may be able to work w/ the files with that software. What size are the files you are working with?

                    Hi,

I do not think I got any software with my CD recorder. Maybe I can look to see which software you are talking about.

I am getting so frustrated here.

                    The file sizes are 193,000, 212,000, 124, 191 kb's.

                    Lynne

use virtualdub to compress the avi's with divx, burn as data and playback on a divx player. easiest way for you.
