In reference to asking the members where they really get their source DVD's would be like:
An anology, of asking Bill Gates to admit that his forthcoming operating system "Vista" is the infant operating system where the government and lobby groups totally control your computer.

Rest assured, government doesnt need Bill Gates new OS to control or monitor the public....there are plenty of items that most folks carry around on a daily basis that allows them to monitor your every move. Its like putting the fox in charge of the hen house, yet the farmer is scratching his head wondering why there are chicken feathers all over the place every morning.

This doesnt apply to everyone but given the incentive I doubt these folks will admit upfront that their DVD is a rental, especially if there is some loop-de-loop process to jump through in order to get information. Bypassing it all together by answering with the right answers, tho they could be false. And just like the government monintoring phone calls of all types, computer traffic on the net, cell phones and messaging, social security numbers, DL numbers etc etc etc. The road to Rome has always been there, look below before you run into that pothole, government doesnt need ol Willy Hilly Billy's OS to do what it WANTS to do, and they will do it regardless of our position.

Same with those with bootleg or borrowed or rented DVD's. They are going to get what they want regardless.

The local Blockbuster here thru away approximatley 2000 DVD's. I wonder what the legality is involving salvaged DVD's. They weren't puchased. They are "salvaged". Is it covered by anylaws explicit or implicit? There was no implied contract when they were salvaged as opposed to puchased. The rules here are prettty straightforward. When some bonehead does admit they rented the DVD it still isn't a waste because so much help is distributed that the question answered is helping a legitimate person. Inversely, a person of low morals can "gleen the fields" and find out how to pirate in these forums without ever joining. Let's not become a policing agency and let us continue the free flow of information that the internet is known for. No declarations, just talk. We all have it coming to us, no matter who we are, we're all guilty of something.

I think that if someone openly admits that they are trying to copy a DVD they do not own that they should get a..well lets call it a holiday from the forums for a day or two..with an explanation..in all honesty we don't really know if people on here are copying rented or borrowed dvds but as has been said before this isn't a legal forum so it should not be discussed..we want to protect the forum tho so if they admit it I think they should get the boot for a bit...

            A very good question!

I would take a guess that if one were to find stuff in a dumpster behind a retail store or video rental store, that it is open for grabs since the items/DVD's were thrown away.

I would be carefull tho, all those DVD's might be that weird Divx or other discs that could only be played a few times or something and then after that they were useless!??

Or perhaps they were all damaged rental discs and might not be readable so they tossed them out.

              hello derree little feller

it's my contention that a member who (in many cases) isn't aware of the rules and makes such a comment, has done it by accident. either way, the general procedure i have seen which i also have adopted is to warn, then close the thread. given this, i think it's just, and a temporary banning would be a bit harsh. some exceptions though would exist i'm sure. sometimes it can be very tricky analyzing what a member has said, also a need to refer to the rules yet again to check on the provisions described by admin.

              my 2 cents

Well my friend who runs the local transfer station said that when anything is throw away it becomes property of the transfer station, period. They can sell, destroy, recycle, they just have to get rid of it. The DVD's were all normal and (not me) 100's were sold on Ebay as used DVD's. They were tossed to make room for new titles. They could have been donated but that is the mentality of people nowadays. I think we shouldn't pretend to be police the response of the moderators is adequate. If more responsiblity is taken on by the moderators it might become expected by big brother

I used to tend bar at a local mall. One day, in the parking lot, were about 200 pairs of high end running shoes. I guess someone from the store was throwing them into the dumpster and missed. Every single shoe was slashed across the side which made them unwearable.

I asked the shoe store manager why and he said that head office was told by the suppliers to destroy the shoes rather than donate them to charity. This way the shoes would always have to be bought and NEVER given away..

A classic case of corporate greed before welfare.

The phrase "Buggers Sickness" may have had another connotation in the old English Navy. Winston Churchill said "The English Navy runs on Rum and Buggery", probably not an exact quote and I wouldn't say it to any Brit sailors face.

I was an asst manager in the shoe dept at a wal-mart and that is what we had to do as well...we did have shoes that were sold to a salvage company which sent them overseas but shoes that didn't go there were destroyed before they were thrown out....and Looie you make a really good point and I agree with you 100% and now agree that a ban off the start is the wrong way to go
