Hardware Issue: HDMI to DVI problem

    Hey,

Sorry if this is not the right thread, I wasn't sure where to post my problem.

I recently bought a new LG upconvert DVD player, which has an HDMI output.

My LCD TV has a DVI input.

So I went out and bought a HDMI to DVI cable.

    Now here's the problem:

    1. Turn on TV, set to DVI input
    2. Turn on LG DVD player
    3. As soon as I turn on the LG player, the very right hand side of the screen has a green, vertical line. It's literally the very edge of the screen. Usually a green solid line, though sometimes there is are a few blue pixels in there as well.

I've tried disconnecting everything, then reconnecting. I've tried changing the TV input from DVI to another input and back again. I've tried shutting everything down, even unplugging the pwer cords, and nothing changes. I always get the green line.

Now how do I figure out where the problem is? It could be the DVD player, the HDMI/DVI cable, or the TV itself, but I have no way of figuring out which it is. I'll break down and get another HDMI/DVI cable later, but I'm afraid of dropping more money on cables if that's not the problem.

Anyone have any advice I would much appreciate it!!!

    Hi!

Lets start by getting a bit more information.

What type of LCD television do you have?

Has the HDMI/DVI cable been tested on another setup?

Does the problem appear with another HDMI or DVI signal source?

Does the problem appear with the other analog inputs from other signal sources?

    Solutions:

Some Sony, Sharp and Phillips LCD units do have a slight problem with decoding the digital signals in HD mode with certian input sources via the HDMI input. This error occurs in differences between the decoding circuitry inside the LCD television vs what is being outputted by the signal source, be it DVD player, sat, or cable box w/HDMI. Sony has a firmware update you can check for via online at http://esupport.sony.com . For other brands check those unit's websites for possible firmware updates.

If your unit is on the firmware update list, you can contact Sony for the nearest service center and they will gladly come out and perform the firmware update for you at no charge for the update. Because most Sony service shops are independantly owned and operated, there may be a service call charge and/or milage fee.

If your unit does not require the firmware update, it could be just a simple service mode adjustment of the horizontal width in the HDMI mode. Note this only applies to the HDMI or 16.9 analog wide mode. Other modes should not need adjusting. If it is a simple adjustment mode, have the service tech also check the vertical hight adjustment. Some units might display the closed caption data within the vertical sync pulse at the very top of the screen in HDMI or 16.9 analog modes.

It is also possible that your LG converter unit might be the source of the line. The key word is "converter" which means it is changing an input to another form for output, which might introduce unwanted results.

    Good luck!!
