When playing back videos, I always have to keep adjusting the volume for each video, isn't there some way to keep the volume constant?
constant volume?

There are devices known as volume stabalizers that keep volume levels consistant from dialogue to action scenes. It does this by compressing the loud segments to a pre-set level and raising low levels to that same pre set level, thus keeping volume at an overall level.
Check http://www.mcminone.com and search for volume stabalizer.
Note: These units do affect how the low end response sounds on a 5.1 or higher home theatre system. It is recommended to hook the stabalizer ONLY to the center dialogue channel of a typical 5.1 system to keep the dialouge at a more consistant level with the sound effects etc on the other channels. NEVER HOOK TO SUB AMP OR SUB OUTPUT!!!!!!

Went to that site and entered "volume stabilizer" in the search but does not turn up anything, tried other words but still nothing?
When I search for just "stabilizer", this is what i get?

Searching the net I can only come up with 2 products but they are discontinued:
Why isn't there "software" for this purpose?Comment

download & install ffdshow from http://www.x264.nl , allow it to decode your audio in start-->programs-->ffdshow-->ffdshow audio config, see the 'volume' settings. what you're after is called normalization
if only for mp3 or aac files, suggest mp3gain & aacgain respectivelyComment

Thanks, will have to look into this much closer before installing as I have many music [DJ] programs in my pc and can't chance to have something take over everything in case there should be problems, my programs all have AGC so no need for this where those programs are concerned, I am only looking into this for "video" playback as some videos play very soft and others play loudly. I see there is a discussion board for this so will take up this issue there tomorow, please feel free to comment here on anything I have written, will keep you informed.Comment

shouldn't be a problem even if your apps are dshow based. under info & debug you can specify which executables ffdshow will not decode for, just type them in
an alternative is using mpc for playback, internal filters should handle most, if not all, audio types. just set up volume control through options-->audio switcherComment

mpc plays flv just fine, just needs a dshow codec (ffdshow will take care of that), gabest's flv splitter is included in MPC
just fyi you can install ffdshow quite safely, just disable decoding for all file types during installation, it won't have any effect on your system. then go start-->programs-->ffdshow-->video decoder config, and set FLV1 to libavcodec, mpc will now play flvComment

i'm thinking you got the wrong file, it's this one http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/ffdshow...se-x264.nl.exe
if not, did you install on an account with admin rights? are you sure you completed the installation?Last edited by anonymez; 6 Jul 2006, 10:52 PM.Comment

Sorry, they must have run out of stock at the site url given, here is another, it is a more professional unit but still easy to operate and connect to your outboard equipment for those annoying loud/soft movies....
Tons of other similar units all over the place....for better search results try "audio compressor limiter"
I am assuming you are attempting to control audio outside of a pc environment.Comment

@rfburns
appreciate the link but like I said, I will try the "software" route first, if not then I will go to the hardware, thanks.
@anonymez
Reinstalled and this time I created a shortcut to Start/programs/accesories. MPC plays the flv files now, got to play some videos to see if the volume is constant, will get back to you. In the meantime,do you know if MPC has a "shuffle" or random play feature? I don't see an option for this anywhere.Comment
