What the hell is SMR?

I downloaded a movie (avi) the other day it said I need an smr codec on the readme. I downloaded a SMR patch but when I open the movie in media player I get no picture or sound, but the clock is ticking as if it is playing back something. Have I been duped and downloaded a load of hot air, or is their different versions of this SMR plugin.

Please Help, I'm using Windows ME on a 700mhz laptop with 8Mb display and 64 Mb ram
