Difference between mpeg mpeg4 and avi? which better quality?

I posted a note here yesterday...I have an mpeg 4 movie (actually a friend of mine) but we dont know how to burn it onto a cd...I was told tmpgenc but seems to support mpeg and limited mpeg2 not mpeg4. How can I manage to burn this mpeg 4 file onto a cd so I can watch it on my dvd player?

Also I am new at this which one is better quality? mpeg... avi... It is to burn on cd and watch onmy dvd at home Idlike a good sound picture quality.

What is divx is it better quality...sorry I started only last week and I know little if not almost nothing!

    Any help explanation is welcome.

DivX and MPEG4 are nearly the same. The mpeg4-movie should have the avi-extension and be playable with any avi player if you installed the right codec.

MPEG1: VCD, normaly low resolution (352x288) and low quality, but playable on many systems and DVD-players

MPEG2: DVD/SVCD, better than mpeg1, but the SVCD-format is not supported by every DVD-player.

MPEG4/DivX: Best compression, but only playable on a computer.
    don't trust in guides

To burn a movie to play in a standalone dvd player you need to burn it as a VCD (Video Cd). Nero ( the cd burning program) will burn vcd's very easily. You just nned a Mpeg1 movie. To convert your Mpeg4 movie to MPEG1 use TMPGEnc.
