I recently bought a Sony laptop in the States, and brought it to the UK where I live. Of course I have found I cant play DVDs bought in England - should have thought of that! Is there any easy way round this problem? Basic question, I am sure, but then I am new to this game.

Besides the power issue, you can set the DVD player in it to region 2.
Click start=> settings=> control panel=> Administrative tools=> Computer management
Left Hand side: Systems Tools=> Device Manager
Right Hand side: Computer ID=> DVD/CD-ROM Devices
Now right click on the drive in question and select properties. Now select the tab (In properties) called DVD region. Select your country and press OK.
You only have 5 of these changes!! If you are going back and forth, then look for some region free firmware for your drive.Gary D
