Putting large xvid/divx avi files on single layer dvd

Everytime I download an xvid or divx avi and try to burn it onto dvd my burning program (Sonic my dvd) says that the file is too large when converted to dvd format to fit onto a single layer disc. Is there a software that will compress the avi file into a smaller dvd format that wil fit onto a single layer dvd disc?

You can try Diko which is a freeware program or nero does it also but costs.
