In a nutshell, -R will give you 8MB more. +R has better compatibility according to most. In the end it depends on your burner and the DVD players you own.

Most people prefer the +R flavored discs because they can offer a higher degree of compatability with standalone players when booktyped to DVD-ROM (commercial DVD). One thing to keep in mind though is that not all burners are capable of bitsetting/booktyping.
Post your burner model number and firmware version you are using and we'll see if you can consider this route.

I have always found both to be compatible (given decent media like Verb or Taiyo's) and tend to choose on Media quality, then price rather than + or - format.
