Dodgy DivX playback

I have recently upgraded to WinXP. I have reinstalled DivX 3.11 ,4.11 and the ATI multimedia center. For some reason some of my DivX discs now do not play using media player. I get sound , and one of the brightly coloured visualizations. Some films work OK. All films seem to work if I play them using the ATI software. What has happened?

Videos compressed with DivX 3.11 (as documented by its creator) are intended to be run with Windows Media Player 6.4 or earlier. Although they'll run under v.7.0, the controls are limited.
