    This is insane

    Here is my story.

I have been decrpting and burning for a few years now, but it has always been computer work.

I go out and buy a "Sony" DVD recorder.... the main purpose was to copy TV shows for when I wasn't there and then watch them when I got home.

This DVD recorder has VHS capability also.

So after setting it all up I go to DVD record a TV show .... the darn recorder gives me a message on the DVD setting :

" protected movie you can not record"

I could record it as a VHS tape though ?

The " Sony" machine would not let me dub the tape onto disk either giving me the same

"protected show you can not recored"

So it seems the powers to be have decided I can make a VHS tape of any program on televisin

but I can not make a DVD recording of " protected shows"

The purpose of this post is for two reasons

    1
What DVD recorder will use DVD +R/RW and allow me to record any program I see on MY television ?

    2
To say "Sony" is way out of line doing to to their consumers in effect telling them they can make a VHS tape but not a DVD disk (never again will I buy a Sony product)

Most of those recorders record onto DVD_RAM in VRO format. Have you got it set up correctly?

Not really sure this is the first time I purchased a DVD recorder.

Will read the manual and check.

What recording mode should I preference if I have a choice ?

        Hi coolcat,

I recently came across a thread about this; http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=312262
I am not real familar with the process, as I don't have a standalone DVD recorder connected to my TV, but it seems that DVD recorders have a "CPRM" which causes the unit to refuse to record TV shows due to copyright flag.

        regards, katz

All I can think of is this. Go into Set-up in your DVD recorder because you might have a setting in the wrong place. Some factories don't always set all the settings the way all customers want them.

Remember, some channels such as Pay-Per-View channels have their programmes encrypted. I know you said you recorded to VHS but I mentioned Pay-Per-View channels encase you sort the problem out and see the message again not relaising Pay-Per-View channels are encrypted.

If you still have no luck it's worth phoning Sony and they can guide you through it as you speak. I have a Sony DVD recorder and I've never had that problem.

          Darren.

Well I read the manual from cover to cover - I think I have it set up right.

It is some kind of broadcast copyright signal that affects the DVD recorder only.

It would appear that some broadcasters put it out and others do not bother.

Dish seems to put it out on the advertisement free channels mostly.

This will take some work to figure out what kind of copyright block they have on broadcast television signals when they have them.

              Makes no sense to me

it is ok to make a copy to a VHS tape

But not a DVD disk ?

Just another way the consumer is getting the shaft now a days.

Thanks to all for the responces.

As a Sony design engineer, I can tell you that it is NOT Sony's decision or fault to incorporate copy protection management into the firmware of the DVD recorders. It is required by federal law. You can thank the MPEG group for that. ANY DVD recorder you buy, no matter if its a Sony or Samsung or whatever, must incorporate copy guard protection.

These units will allow 1 time recording of protected tv broadcasts onto a DVD RW disc in VRO mode, which is basically "open book" format. Once you make the recording onto the DVD RW disc, you can take that disc and copy it over to a DVD R disc via disc to disc copy.

good info, RF. At least you can do a one time recording with it. Now, does anyone make modded firmware to override the CPRM?!?

What is this "copyrighted show" thing? I was thinking of getting a DVD recorder so I am curious.

Is it like macrovision (that can be easily avoided )?

Well RFBurns has lost me unless he is saying that the broadcasters put out the 1 time recording signal

because I can not even do that

the machine has two formats to record

                          VR
                          and
                          Video

                          and no other record formats

no matter what format I use I get this on advertisement free channels

fact is this thing will not record any kind of movie on a movie channel

I would appreciate it if he would explain how it can be done the model number is RDR-VX530

I can not find a VRO mode anywhere on the menu

EDIT: I wonder if hard drive equipped DVD recorders will allow a recording ?
                          Anyone know ?
This is not illegal as I can make a VHS recording for personal use just not a Disk recording, what format I use should be of no concern to anyone but me ?

If it was an anolog VS digital thing I would not get anything anywhere .

And the part I do not understand at all is the recorder will not allow me to dup a tape to a disk if it recorded one of the Protected movie shows that it did record ------- it will display the same protected movie dialog ?

I think RFBurns addressed the work around here

Try the Sima unit, link to it is in my signature below.

It has composite RCA and S-Video inputs and outputs. It also has circuitry to clean up analog sources, and can output in NTSC or PAL with the flip of a tiny switch. It removes copyguard effectively.
