The technology, EZ-D, is elegant and simple. The discs stop working because they change from a DVD-readable red to an unreadable black because of oxidation. You open them up, letting the oxygen in, watch them and in 48 hours you have a coaster instead of a DVD.
Walt Disney’s home video unit of Buena Vista division, using Flexplay Technologies technology, is going to start selling DVDs that self-destruct after two days in August. It’s an incredibly a stupid idea.
I believe this for only for rental copies because of videos libraries making so much money out of one batch of titles. For example, a video library might have got 15 copies of Poseidon and they are making a lot of money out of the rentals of each copy instead of getting more stock of Poseidon. I know Poseidon isn't a Buena Vista, I mentioned Poseidon as an example. As we know, Poseidon is Warner Bros. Video libraries are sending some money to each and every film distributor but the distributors might think it's not enough for the rental versions.
What does anyone else think over this whole topic? I think it's utter bollocks.
