    can anyone help?

I have an asf file on my computer that I'm trying to delete. Problem is I can't get it to delete. I've tried everything I can think of from converting it to an avi file to starting the computer in safe mode. Any ideas would be great and thanks to all that reply.

can you cut and paste it into the recycle bin? obviously make sure all programs are closed, may need to re-boot.

          thanks

Thanks for the ideas, I tried them all. I went back 2 months on system restore but had no luck with it, When I try to copy and past it into the trash I don't even get the option to copy let alone paste, the unlock program is great and shows up on every file right click other than the one I'm trying to delete. It's now telling me that the file name is invalid or too long wet I can't get it to rename, I even tried a renaming program and a shredder program that didn't help they also said that the file name is too long or invalid.

if you were to create a sub-folder, will it let you drag and drop it into the sub-folder?

i also found some info that may help
I know that you have said that you cannot rename the file, but that is your best option for getting rid of it. I frequently store concert music on my computer (usually recorded live) which can make the file names very long - composer, date, soloists, etc. Windows is fine with the name as long as the COMPLETE PATH is not longer than 256 characters.

This means a file located on the C drive, such as:

                C:\concert.mp3

is considered 14 characters long. Now, Windows - being typical, not too bright Windows - thinks it's ok to move a long named file into a long-named directory. So, we take our file with a 200 character long name, and put it into a folder with a really long name - say, 100 characters long. Now the total path is 300 characters. Windows will let you PUT the file there, but then it gets confused when trying to access it! I don't know why.

USUALLY, though, as someone mentioned above, you can rename the DIRECTORY the file is in, thereby allowing you to access the FILE within the directory. So, my suggestion - rename the directory it is in to make it 1 character long (ie. change the folder "My favorite multimedia" to "p". THEN Windows will let you access the file within it.

If renaming just the one directory doesn't help, then MOVE that directory to the C:\ level - then the path will be shorter than if it is in My Documents\My Stuff\My multimedia\More directory names\etc.

So in summary, if you can't access the file directory - rename its CONTAINER (the folder it's in) and move it to a ROOT level. Then you should be able to access the file, rename it to something shorter, and then delete the file itself.

This little program was made for situations like yours.
It was made to kill virus's that are in memory and also delete the undeletable files. It's real easy to use and understand.

These all sound like great ideas and I'd try them all. I've actually had this happen to me before and the only way I could get rid of it was to first make a new folder. Move everything in the existing folder that you want to keep leaving only the file your trying to delete left in the original folder. Click the up arrow button on your main bar so that you are one folder out of the one your having the trouble with and delete that whole folder. Rename the folder that you just made back to the original name and your back to where you want to be. Hope this works for you.

                    Cheers

OK, you are just trying to get rid of the program?
I know something that's helped me before, called Unlocker:

Simply install this little app, right click on the file you want to delete and say "unlock". It will let you end the processes accessing the folder so the file can be deleted.
                      CYA Later:

This is most likely NOT your situation, but something to keep in mind when deleting files NOT needed.

My registry cleaner says I have 28 files that are not needed on my computer for WHATEVER REASON. So I have deleted them. So I delete them with the registry cleaner and they are all gone. Upon re-booting they all come back because the software program they are associate with is designed to do this, probably for some option in the software program.

The point being, there are some software programs by design which put the files right back on your computer no matter weather you use this option or not, it is part of the basic software package and executes itself automatically.
