dat to mpeg to avi ?

Why is it that when I load my newly created mpeg file (original dat file converted to mpeg in vcd gear) into flask to convert into avi, Flask crashes when i try to set codecs? Are there any other straight forword programes that can convert mpeg to avi?
The mpeg plays fine in wmp but crashes Premier grrrrrr.
